Learn about Opal
Opal is the birthstone for October measuring 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness, and is primarily produced in Australia. Opal can contain up to 20% water and this can make it potentially quite brittle and easily chipped. Opals can be made into a doublet or triplet which is a form of treatment - section of the opal is backed with epoxy resin creating a doublet or topped with resin to create a triplet. This adds thickness, strength and weight to pieces otherwise thin or brittle. Find out more....
